  • Location: Across the Kensington & Chelsea borough

  • Purpose: The council introduced ‘school streets’ which will tackle air pollution outside schools by encouraging parents and children to frequently walk or cycle. It also improves road safety and the appearance of local streets with fewer cars.

  • Description: The ‘school street’ is a timed restriction on traffic around the immediate area of the school for around 30-45 minutes. RBKC’s scheme was trialled for six months, with residents and parents providing positive feedback. Residents living within the scheme get an exemption so they can be granted access to the road.

  • Funding: Each school can apply to the council for a £500 grant for initiatives that promote sustainable travel

  • Conservative councillor/ council lead: RBKC Lead Member for Planning, Place and Environment, Johnny Thalassites

  • Further links: Johnny Thalassites contribution to the CEN Blog and a CEN briefing for councillors on the RBKC scheme.
