Westminster City Council (Conservative controlled until May 2022): Electric Avenue

  • Location: Sutherland Avenue

  • Purpose: Westminster City Council has some of the worst air quality in the country. The majority of homes in Westminster lack private parking, making home charging difficult. To help residents to make the shift to a cleaner vehicle, the Council has undergone a comprehensive public chargepoint installation programme.

  • Description: Westminster City Council has a target of installing 1,000 public charge points. The Council decided to partner with Siemens and Ubitricity to convert 24 lampposts on Sutherland Avenue into electric vehicle charging points. The charge points power range from 3kW to 50kW. Additionally, installing charge points into lamp posts eliminates pavement clutter.

  • Funding: Westminster City Council awarded the contract to Siemens who provide, maintain and manage the 1,000 charge points.

  • Conservative councillor/ council lead: Then Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Management Councillor Melvyn Caplan and Cabinet Member for Environment & Highways Cllr Andrew Smith
