Buckinghamshire Council, Bucks Tree Mission
Location: Buckinghamshire, South East
Purpose: Plant more than 500,000 trees over the course of 10 years to create new woodland across Buckinghamshire. Bucks Tree Mission is part of their Climate Change and Air Quality Strategy.
Description: Established in 2021 to support the council’s goal of planting one tree for every Buckinghamshire resident to enhance biodiversity, help mitigate against climate change, improve air quality, reduce surface temperatures and water run-off, and expand access to recreational green spaces. In October 2025, the scope of the mission was expanded to include tree planting facilitated by the council on any land in the county, not just council-owned land. This has contributed to 257,000 trees being planted as part of the scheme by May 2026. Additionally, the council launched a survey of interest. Survey participants can opt in to receive further information about tree giveaways, funding opportunities, and planting advice. Furthermore, landowners are able to apply for two free tree packs this winter so long as they identify where they intend to plant the trees to follow the council’s “right tree, right place” approach.
Funding: Partnered with Forestry England, Local Authority Treescapes Fund (Closed), England Woodland Creation Offer (Forestry Commission), Tiny Forests (Earthwatch), MOREWoods (Woodland Trust).
Conservative Councillor/Council Lead: Cllr Ade Osibogun, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate Change and Waste
