  • Location: Hillingdon, London

  • Purpose: Improve road safety and access to active travel through projects pitched by students.

  • Description: Hillingdon Council has awarded eight primary schools more than £3,500 to implement active travel and road safety projects, following successful bids from students in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style event. The annual event gives elected pupil representatives a platform to pitch ideas for road safety schemes to a panel of councillors and council officers, creating space for original ideas that address unique local issues. Suggestions this year included step count challenges to promote active travel, a school pool bike scheme to support students who do not own a bike, and a road safety themed playground to help teach younger children essential safety skills.

  • Funding: Hillingdon Council’s Transport for London Local Implementation Plan budget

  • Conservative Councillor/Council Lead: Cllr Wayne Bridges, Cabinet Member for Residents Service
