Hertsmere Borough Council: Clothes Swap

Updated: Jul 29, 2024

  • Purpose: Producing new clothing is resource intensive and the rise of fast fashion has accelerated the amount of textile waste we produce. Every year we produce 92 million tonnes of textile waste, whilst the fashion industry produces 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions globally. By hosting clothes swap events, this council is raising awareness of textile waste and providing an opportunity for residents to source pre-loved clothes for free, helping to reduce textile waste and save money.

  • Description: The events are promoted on the council website, with the events usually taking place at a local auditorium on a Saturday morning. Residents can bring the clothes they no longer want to the event and in return can swap clothes for free with other residents in attendance.

  • Conservative councillor/council lead: Cllr Morris Bright, leader
