Clean Power 2030: Tony Blair Institute calls for 'reframing' of flagship target

However, the Conservative Environment Network (CEN) urged the government to drop the clean power target, warning the rush to meet the 2030 deadline could push up grid costs.
"The 2030 Clean Power Target is a millstone around the neck of UK climate action," said CEN director Sam Hall. "It risks increasing electricity bills, thereby alienating voters and slowing the uptake of heat pumps and electric cars. With British electricity already substantially decarbonised and rates of electrification low, it was always the wrong target from a climate perspective.
"They should now turn briefing into reality and formally scrap this unnecessary and counter-productive target. As well as restoring market forces to the clean energy rollout by ditching the target, they should announce further steps to cut the cost of electricity and drive electrification. We need to reduce some of the taxes and levies on electricity bills and streamline planning to make it cheaper to build new clean power infrastructure."
