Miliband’s de-linking approach is more tax, more government, little impact

Dillon Smith, Head of Policy for the Conservative Environment Network, said:

“Spiralling electricity prices are holding back growth and kneecapping decarbonisation. But Miliband’s de-linking announcement is high-risk, low-reward, further entrenching fixed prices for renewables far into the future and will be undermined if gas prices come down, all while providing no immediate relief to households.

“It also adds further complexity and taxes to the energy system. Instead of cutting levies to immediately bring down bills, it doubles down by increasing them. Additionally, it bakes in more central planning, leaving us further reliant on government competence to negotiate wholesale contracts for differences instead of letting markets work.

“This is government by press release, more interested in delivering headlines than delivering for the British people.”
