Responding to the Climate Change Committee’s report on the Government’s progress on reducing emissions, Sam Hall, Director of the Conservative Environment Network, said:
“The CCC's report lays bare the government's failure to reduce electricity prices. Cheap power is vital not only for household finances and industrial competitiveness, but for electrifying more of the economy and therefore decarbonising. Reducing gas use and building more clean energy isn't sufficient to lower bills.
“The arbitrary 2030 clean power target, combined with the statist approach encapsulated by GB Energy, risks making the clean energy transition more expensive through inefficient central planning and squeezing out competition. The government must instead harness market forces to lower bills. That means having truly competitive clean energy auctions and streamlined regulations to make it cheaper to build, sharper price signals to tackle waste, and reforms to green levies and taxes to alleviate pressure on electricity bills.”
