While some will have been disappointed that Kemi Badenoch has dropped the net zero by 2050 target, undoubtedly many of the concerns she raised about Labour’s statist approach to net zero were fair. As the Conservative Party begins its policy review process, we will be asking what a conservative, free market approach to the clean energy transition looks like.
The stakes couldn't be higher for this debate. The UK's electricity prices are among the highest in the developed world, squeezing households and businesses alike. These high costs aren't just hitting our pockets today – they're threatening tomorrow's prosperity. Britain needs more cheap and clean energy to help us seize the golden opportunities of emerging industries like AI.
